Expectations high for Navarre football team

Xavier Fernandez remembers what it was like the first time he played varsity football a season ago.

He admits he was nervous and wasn’t sure how his year would play out.

Turns out, he excelled, becoming an integral part of the defense, racking up a team-best 125 tackles.

“I was surprised by how well I did,” Fernandez said. “It was a great season and I’m coming in a lot more comfortable and confident this year.”

Confidence is something the Raiders won’t lack as they gear up for what they hope will be a special season. Coming off a 9-3 campaign that included a playoff appearance, Navarre has the ultimate goal on its mind.

“We want to win a state championship,” Navarre head coach Jay Walls said. “We want to be the best team ever here at Navarre.”

Six starters return on each side of the ball, the most notable being junior running back Michael Carter, who already has five Division I college offers. Carter rushed for 744 yards and 12 touchdowns while catching 20 passes for 337 yards and five touchdowns.

“We’re expecting another great year out of Michael and we also have a solid backup in Hasaan Williams,” Walls said. “Our running game should be in good shape.”
