Park restrooms open near proposed boardwalk location

It’s been nearly 11 years since Hurricane Ivan destroyed the restrooms at Navarre Park, and on Friday, March 20, the new facility finally opened its doors.

The original restrooms were located close to the playground and the splash pad, but the new facility was built near the pavilion and gazebo, less than 110 feet from the property where James Dabney, owner of East River Smoke House, plans to build a boardwalk and a marina.

Originally, FEMA designated more than $9,000 to rebuild the restrooms in 2006, but according to Sheila Harris, Santa Rosa County grants director, when the new visitors’ center was built, restrooms were included in the building, eliminating the need for free-standing bathrooms.
