STEAM Innovate launches year two

Santa Rosa County students will be able to tour the home of a middle-class family in Africa through virtual reality or witness the impressive forces of a train hitting a car from inside the vehicle or even submit the tire design for NASA’s next Mars rover.

And it is all thanks to STEAM Innovate.

The Santa Rosa County School District kicked off its second year of STEAM Innovate Thursday, Sept. 15, at Ascend Performance Materials in Pensacola with tours for educators of the manufacturing facility as well as presentations of what the program will offer to educators this school year.

STEAM, which stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, is a movement within the education system to change the way teachers teach these subjects to their students of all ages by focusing in on real-world application, collaboration and problem-solving.

STEAM Innovate is a partnership between the school district and Discovery Education to push that movement into classrooms throughout the county.

The Santa Rosa School District was the first to embark on this journey Discovery Education’s Regional Vice President Katie Bradigan said.
