Fat Albert thrills riders

Walking up to the towering Blue Angels Hanger at the Pensacola Naval Aviation Station Friday, July 15, I had one goal for my media ride aboard the show teams impressive C-130 airplane Fat Albert.

Do not throw up.

My coworker Brian Lester had told me all about his ride aboard the plane during last year’s dress rehearsal show and how gut wrenching some of the maneuvers could be.

Call it pride, but I was determined to keep my blueberry waffle in its proper place. My stomach.

I joined some 30 or more military members and other media riders for the once in a lifetime chance.

It wasn’t lost on me the honor this ride conveys. These men and women dedicate their lives to our country’s defense and were here as a pat on the back for jobs well done.

These riders could understand in a way I never could the feeling as they took to the air for their first shows at home since the tragic loss of Capt. Jeff Kuss.

Loading in along the walls of Fat Albert’s cargo bay, we were strapped in like sardines all sweating in waiting. There’s no AC in the back of Bert as the plane is nicknamed, and the military folks on board in full flight suits had to be burning up.
