Don’t wait for a warning sign – Get a free skin cancer screening this May

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and there’s no better time to take a closer look at your skin. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and one in five Americans will develop it in their lifetime. The good news is that when caught early, it is highly treatable. Living in Northwest Florida means sun exposure is simply part of daily life, which makes regular skin checks not just a good idea, but an important one.

Dermatology Specialists of Florida is bringing a free screening to Navarre and offering exclusive savings all month long.

This May, Dermatology Specialists of Florida is making it easy for area residents to take that step. Free community skin cancer screenings conducted by Lauren Hagen, PA-C will be held at both the Navarre office at 2053 Fountain Professional Court, Suite B on Tuesday afternoon, May 26, and the Gulf Breeze office at 3089 Gulf Breeze Parkway on Thursday afternoon, May 28. These complimentary exams are open to community members who are at least 18 years of age and have not had a professional skin screening within the past 12 months. Spots are limited, so call (850) 932-1455 to reserve your appointment today. For more information, visit mydermspecialists.com/may-skin-screening.

Navarre and Gulf Breeze patients benefit from having an experienced and dedicated dermatology team close to home. Dr. John H. Phillips III, MD, a board-certified dermatologist with nearly 30 years of private practice experience, sees patients at both offices. Dr. Phillips has built his career around the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer and is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Academy of Dermatologic Surgery. If a screening reveals something that needs a higher level of care, patients are referred to Dr. Jon Ward, MD, at the Gulf Breeze office. Dr. Ward is one of the first physicians in the nation to receive dual board certification in both dermatology and Mohs micrographic surgery, founded Dermatology Specialists of Florida in 2006, and has performed more than 20,000 skin cancer surgeries. For many skin cancers, Mohs micrographic surgery is considered the gold standard, offering the highest cure rates while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.

Between now and your screening, keep the ABCDEs of melanoma in mind: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter larger than a pencil eraser, and Evolving changes in any spot or mole. If anything looks different or feels off, trust your instincts and get it checked.

A few simple habits also go a long way toward protecting your skin year-round. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning and reapply every two hours outdoors. Wear UV-protective sunglasses and a wide-brim hat when spending time in the sun, seek shade during peak UV hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and skip the tanning beds entirely. Even on overcast days, up to 80 percent of UV rays still reach your skin.

To make sun protection a little more affordable this month, Aqua Medical Spa is offering 25% off all sunscreen throughout May, available in-spa at the Gulf Breeze location or online at aquamedicalspa.com.

Don’t wait for a warning sign. Call today to reserve your spot and make this the month you show up for your skin.
