Averie Prochazka stood near the top of the 3-point line and decided to just shoot the ball. She’s not one of the players typically filling up the stat sheet, but on this night, the senior role player took charge. Prochazka launched the ball up from beyond the arc and sent it swishing through the net early in the first quarter Thursday night.

Sarah Shipley smiled as she popped off of the bench after her final lift, clenching her fists and stretching out her arms before leaping over to her teammates to celebrate a personal exclamation point kind of moment at the District 1-3A girls weightlifting meet Wednesday afternoon in Niceville. Shipley hit a new PR on the bench with a 185-pound lift, willing herself to get the bar up despite the extra strength it took to do it and clinching a district championship in traditional along the way.

Getting to the top is tough. Staying there is even harder. Navarre’s girls weightlifting team knows that as well as anyone. The two-time reigning state champion Raiders lost their own invitational a few weeks ago, finishing as the runner-up to Pace, and head coach Garrett Bagley said at the time he hoped it would serve as motivation.

Wins haven’t been easy to come by this season for Navarre’s boys soccer team. A tough schedule and a young team have played a part in that. But the Raiders had something to celebrate last Tuesday night at home on the turf of Bennett C. Russell Stadium, beating county rival Pace 4-1.
