Thanksgiving is a uniquely American holiday, and for many people represents their only four-day holiday. So what better time to offer license-free fishing days? Friday, Nov. 29, will be a license-free freshwater fishing day, followed by a saltwater license-free day on Nov. 30.

NJROTC cadets spend night aboard USS Alabama
Navarre’s Raider Battalion had the opportunity to tour and sleep aboard the retired ship, the USS Alabama, last week. A group of 40 cadets made the trip — the male cadets one day and the female cadets followed on the next day.

The Santa Rosa Medical Center is on a roll lately, as it was recently honored with an “A” grade in the recent update to the Hospital Safety Score. It the second straight year SRMC has received the highest mark from the Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections.

No TDC funds for June Ates Arena; County fair lineup takes shape
Santa Rosa County Commissioner Bob Cole has reversed course and decided to use recreation funds from District 2 to fund the purchase of bleachers and other equipment for the county’s June Ates Arena in East Milton. Initially, Cole recommended that the Santa Rosa County Tourist Development Council (TDC) use bed tax money for the purchases.

The East River Smokehouse on Highway 98 in Navarre lived up to its name last Wednesday as buildup of residue in the barbecue fire pit chimney briefly caught fire and created a lot of smoke at about 10 a.m.

County leases special voting equipment
During the annual county budgeting process, Supervisor of Elections Tappie Villane requested an increase in funding attributed to the upcoming 2014 election cycle. One significant increase Villane noted during her July presentation to county commissioners was the leasing of special equipment for voters with disabilities or conditions which make it difficult to mark a traditional ballot.
