Eighth grade students at Woodlawn Beach Middle School are getting a chance to become industry certified before they even reach high school through a new Information Technology Academy launched this year.

GAINESVILLE — Edith Kaan, whose research into the way people respond to foreign languages normally keeps her busy in a lab in the maze of Turlington Hall’s basement, spent most of the past year traveling abroad courtesy of a sabbatical awarded by the University of Florida.

Local community leaders will help eighth graders at Woodlawn Beach Middle School become more confident and assertive conversationalists through a competition called the Amazing Shake. WBMS algebra teacher Jeffrey Baugus, local organizer of the program, said that his eighth grade students will get a chance to practice their soft business skills and become better conversationalists.

CLEARWATER — Florida may keep a safety net for another year that could keep some schools from getting branded with an “F” grade.

The Navarre Wal-Mart awarded 20 Holley-Navarre Primary School teachers with gift cards Wednesday to purchase classroom supplies for the new school year, which many teachers often do on their own dime.
