One by one, miniature versions of pirates, Capt. America and Super Girl made their way in to the fifth annual Science Spooktacular by the Sea Friday evening at the Navarre Beach Marine Science Station.

The cost to maintain Navarre Beach facilities were up this year due to the winter freeze and the need to rebuild three lifeguard stands due to high winds. Pier restrooms were also renovated bringing the 2013-2014 season’s current expenses to $59,702. That number is up $25,106 from last year and $32,579 from two years ago.

Navarre likes its chili spicy, extra spicy if possible. That’s what you would’ve discovered if you were among the 75 locals armed with small Styrofoam cups and plastic spoons at the 21st annual Charity Chili Cook-Off hosted at Juana’s Pagoda’s Sunday, Oct. 19.

The Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center has a new attraction aimed to promote education and awareness of local reefs and marine ecosystems. The center launched 5 clear-bottomed kayaks at their Oct. 11 Sea Turtle Extravaganza.

The Benaq Shaq Café at Navarre Beach Fishing Pier closed Oct. 8. Restaurant operations remained suspended Oct. 9 for a routine quarterly cleaning. The restaurant reopened Oct. 10 with a new but familiar name – Lagerheads.

Red plastic cups dot tables at Juana’s Pagodas Saturday afternoon, while plates of sausage and cheese make their way around to thirsty and hungry Oktoberfest event-goers.

Construction is nearly complete at the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center in Navarre Beach Marine Park.

Navarre residents and visitors had plenty to do at the beach this weekend as the fifth annual Navarre Beach Sand Sculpting Festival and the Navarre Fishing Rodeo both took place over the weekend of Sept. 26 through Sept. 28.

Water fountains in Navarre Beach Marine Park have been broken since last winter. They will probably stay that way according to Terry Wallace who oversees Navarre Beach utilities and functions.
