Hurricane Isaias makes it final approach

| Collin Bestor

Hurricane Isaias has weakened slightly but is still a major Category 3 hurricane as landfall quickly approaches.

Conditions are continuing to deteriorate at the Santa Rosa County Emergency Operations Center as Hurricane Isaias prepares to make landfall.

According to the 5 p.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center, the storm is located about 70 miles south of Pensacola and is moving north at 17 mph. The storm has sustained winds of 115 mph.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 miles. Hurricane-force winds will extend inland as far as 100 miles once the storm makes landfall.

Storm surge estimates remained unchanged for coastal Santa Rosa County, with heights reaching anywhere from six to nine feet.

Through the weekend, rainfall amounts will be anywhere from 4 to 8 inches, with as high as 12 inches in local areas. Flash, urban, and river flooding is possible.

As for road closures, the Navarre Beach Causeway, the Bob Sikes Bridge, the Garcon Point Bridge, and the Three-Mile Bridge are closed due to high winds.

County Public Safety Director Tom Llyod urged county residents to stay off the roads as the storm approaches and passes by our area, as the all-clear signal does not mean conditions are safe to leave your home.
