Patronis issues warning about deed fraud

| Staff Reporters
Congressman Jimmy Patronis on May 5 warned consumers about a surge in real estate deed scams.

Fraudsters target vacant or unmonitored homes and use forged documents to sell those properties to unsuspecting buyers, according to a news release from Patronis. It states that according to the FBI, nationwide, from 2019 through 2023, 58,000 victims reported $1.3 billion in losses relating to real estate fraud.

Patronis provided tips from the FBI about how to prevent real estate scams.

“Homeowners beware! I’m encouraging everyone to stay vigilant and take the steps necessary to prevent you and your home from becoming the victim of a scam,” Patronis said. “Set up alerts online to make you aware of any changes to the ownership of your property. When buying a home, do your due diligence and research the property before agreeing to make any purchase, especially if doing so over the phone or online.

“For many Americans, the biggest investment they will ever make is their home, and you should do everything you can to protect that investment. If you or someone you know are suspicious of unauthorized deed activity, please report it immediately to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.”

Tips to prevent deed fraud and protect your home from scammers:

  • Regularly check your property records for unauthorized changes.
  • Set up alerts for any filings related to your property.
  • Be cautious of unsolicited offers or communications regarding your property.
  • Consult with legal professionals before making decisions related to property ownership.
