School Board moves to extend life of half-cent tax

A third of the Santa Rosa School District’s capital outlay budget will be on the line March 28, 2017, with a special election to decide if a half-cent capital outlay sales tax will continue in the county.

The tax, which brings in an estimated $7.5 million a year, has been in place since 1998.

“This is not a new tax,” Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services Joey Harrell said. “Every ten years by statute, we have to bring it back up to the voters…One of the big positives to this is the state allows districts to levy up to 1.5 mills [in property taxes] for capital outlay. The board since 1998 has held consistent at 1.4 mills.”
