Red snapper season extended into late November

Recreational fishing in the Gulf is big business. According to Amanda Nalley, the public information specialist for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, it brings in billions each year, and that includes fishing for red snapper.

“While we don’t have this number broken down, we do know recreational fishing in Gulf Waters adds $7.6 billion annually to Florida’s economy,” Nalley said.

So with that in mind, it comes as no surprise that Florida Gov. Rick Scott opted to request an extension to the season through November in an effort to offset the economic impact of Tropical Storm Colin, which hit the Gulf earlier this summer.
