Santa Rosa County Emergency Management communications are getting an upgrade this month thanks to a new early warning system and App initiated by the Florida Department of Emergency Management.
The system, Alert Santa Rosa, is part of a statewide effort to improve disaster communications throughout the state. Residents of the county can sign up for emergency situation notifications based on their geographic location.
The system will make posts to social media and provide real-time updates for anyone who signs up, Santa Rosa Emergency Management Director Brad Baker said.
“It’s about the community being more prepared to handle those disasters,” Baker said. “The more knowledge you have the better prepared you are. Technology has changed so much we should be able to get these on the devices that we carry around every day.”
Like the old email system the county utilized, participants will be able to customize which kinds of emergencies they want alerts for, but the new system will send alerts to multiple points of contact until it is confirmed that the recipient is aware of the threat.
