Lent begins with Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday begins the Season of Lent which for many Christians is a time of reflection and preparation leading up to Easter. Pastors and priests use the ashes made from burning the palms that were distributed the previous year on Palm Sunday to mark each person’s forehead with a Sign of the Cross.
Ash Wednesday, this year observed March 5, begins the Season of Lent. During Mass, a Sign of the Cross is made on each person’s forehead. The ashes are made by burning the palms that were distributed the previous year on Palm Sunday.
