Sargassum mats wash ashore

Multiple sargassum mats washed ashore near Navarre Beach Fishing Pier the afternoon of June 16. The huge mats were busted up by breaking waves near the shore.

The floating seaweed might be a nuisance to swimmers, but the mats play host to a diversity of marine life. Chris Verlinde, Florida Sea Grant Extension Agent for Santa Rosa County said fish and crabs can often be found inside. Turtles are also known to use it for nesting.

Unlike June grass, Verlinde said there’s not really a season for sargassum.
