Cycling awareness hits home

Roger Grooters, 66, of Gulf Breeze, had less than 300 miles left in his cross-country quest to raise money and awareness for victims of the BP oil spill when his cycling trip ended abruptly in Ebro, Fla.

Grooters was struck and killed by a distracted driver on Oct. 6, 2010.

He started his journey in Oceanside, Calif., and raised more than $12,000 during the 2,100-mile trip. His mission statement, “But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?” (1 John 3:17), helped guide him through his trek.

The man who hit him was on his cellphone and taking notes in his car, his wife Vicki said.
