When Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japan in December 1941, catapulting the United States into World War II, Hershel “Woody” Williams was a teenager in Montana working with the Civil Conservation Corps.
Like so many in his generation, Williams immediately wanted to join the war effort. “I had never heard of Pearl Harbor. I had no knowledge of what was going on in the world,” Williams said.
