West Nile found at Hurlburt Field

Hurlburt Field confirmed Thursday, Aug. 25, that mosquitoes trapped at their Soundside locations tested positive for the presence of West Nile Virus in one of the samples.

This comes on the heals of a confirmed human case of West Nile in Santa Rosa County Aug. 19.

The mosquito-borne disease has symptoms of fever, head and body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash.  A very small percentage of people can go on to develop inflammation of the brain. One in five people who contract the virus show symptoms.

The Florida Department of Health advises residents to wear long sleeved clothing and mosquito repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, and IR3535.

Drain any standing water to limit mosquito breeding.
