Twins set to be new parent club of Blue Wahoos

Minnesota is the new parent club of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.

The announcement was made Monday. Pensacola had spent the first seven years of its existence with the Cincinnati Reds but chose to explore other options. The deal with the Twins is for two years.

San Diego was the other team in the running. The Padres announced a deal with Amarillo Monday.

Pensacola will enter its eighth season as a Double-A team in the Southern League in the spring of 2019. It is a three-time organization of the year in the league.

The Blue Wahoos are coming off their fourth consecutive appearance in the playoffs and are one of only two teams in the league to make the playoffs each of the last four years.

Chattanooga was the former Double-A affiliate of the Twins. That team is now with the Reds, who were associated with the Lookouts before switching to Pensacola when it joined the league in 2012.

Minnesota has Single-A teams in Cedar Rapids (Iowa) and Fort Myers. The Twins’ Triple-A team is in Rochester (N.Y.).
