Titles by boys weightlifting, UWF headline sports year

Members of Navarre’s boys weightlifting team awaited the results of the state championship meet inside Arnold High School on an April afternoon.

The Raiders knew they were assured of second place. But the hope was to be first.

And they were. By the slimmest of margins, a single point to be exact, Navarre edged 27-time champ Spruce Creek for the crown

That championship, the first in program history, was one of the biggest stories of the year.

It is rivaled only by what the University of West Florida did on the football field, winning an NCAA Division II national championship in just its fourth season of existence.

Matt Cronin made history as the first from Navarre to get drafted into pro baseball while the Pensacola Blue Wahoos set a franchise record in their eighth season.
