Swirling shoal mystifies visitors, locals

That’s no June grass. Masses of tiny 2-inch fish schooled along Navarre Beach just west of the fishing pier Oct. 14.

The mass of fish, stretching along the shore in front of four condominium buildings, caught the attention of beachgoers who scooped them up with nets or their bare hands.

“I’ve never seen that before off the pier or anywhere in Navarre,” said Navarre Beach Marine Science Station Director Charlene Mauro.
