Residents of the Inn at Summerwinds’ most eastern tower were evacuated around 4 p.m. Thursday due to a fire.
The blaze broke out on the north eastern corner of the roof sending a pillar of smoke over the beach.
Petra Francis of Navarre Properties, who’s office is located in the tower, said work crews have been making repairs to the roof area after Hurricane Sally caused damage in September.
Navarre Beach, Midway and Holley Navarre firefighters responded to the scene. Though the fire was extinguished quickly, at least one firefighter need treatment for exhaustion from the 12 story climb.
Visitor Tamara Fain was staying in Summerwinds and described hearing people shouting to evacuate and that the building was on fire. She said the fire alarm did not go off.
This is a developing story. Updates will be made as more information becomes available.
