Veteran Miami-Dade detective charged with traffic stop theft
A veteran Miami-Dade Police Department detective is facing federal charges after allegedly stealing from motorists during traffic stops. A grand jury indictment released Thursday charges Det. William Kostopoulos with three civil rights violations and one count of witness tampering. The indictment charges that Kostopoulos stole money and other items from three motorists in different traffic stops in the Homestead area and then made false statements to investigators regarding what other witnesses told them. The amount of money taken was not disclosed.
Florida Legislature to vote on budget, end special session
Florida legislators are expected to vote on new state budget and finally end their contentious special session. Legislators have been in the state Capitol since June 1. They plan to approve a nearly $79 billion budget Friday evening and then adjourn until next year. The Republican-controlled Florida Legislature ended its regular session without a budget. House and Senate leaders had been at odds over health care and health care spending. State government could be partially shut down if a new budget is not in place by July 1.
School bus with children on board hits, kills bicyclist
Authorities say a bicyclist has died after he fell off his bike and was run over by a school bus. The Miami-Dade Police Department says the accident happened Thursday around 3:55 p.m. They say a private school bus with a bus aide and several children on board was traveling south behind a bicyclist. Police say the bus attempted to go around the cyclist on the left side and the person on the bike fell off, landing under the bus. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity has not been released. The students were transferred to another bus.
Officials: Coach tricked boys into sharing nude pics
An assistant wrestling coach at Wesley Chapel High School has been arrested and accused of using social media to trick teenage boys into sharing nude photos of themselves. Authorities say 22-year-old Carlos Perez was arrested Wednesday night. Authorities say he has been posing as a female and befriending teenage boys online for the past five years. Deputies say since then Perez, posing as Alayna Dentry, has been eliciting nude photos from them.
South Florida officer suspended amid harassment claim
A South Florida police officer has been suspended amid allegations that he harassed a 17-year-old girl after she made an illegal U-turn. Hialeah police Chief Sergio Velazquez said Thursday that the department is investigating the claims against Sgt. Jesus “Jessie” Menocal Jr. The teen was taken to the police station where she complained she’d been harassed. Velazquez says police leaders met with the Miami-Dade’s state attorney’s officials on Monday to coordinate delivery of the evidence. He called the investigation “a very delicate road” and said if wrongdoing is proven, the “appropriate decision will be taken.”
