14-PLUS YEARS FOR CUBAN BALLPLAYER SMUGGLER
A judge has imposed a prison sentence of more than 14 years on the convicted ringleader of a smuggling organization that brought more than 1,000 Cubans into the U.S., including several baseball players. Eliezer Lazo pleaded guilty in August to extortion charges involving the migrants, including Texas Rangers outfielder Leonys Martin. Other ballplayers are identified only by initials. U.S. District Judge Joan Lenard on Monday rejected Lazo’s request for a lighter sentence.
FLORIDA WOMAN SURVIVES DESPITE GOING 45 MINUTES WITHOUT PULSE AFTER CESAREAN SECTION
The Boca Raton mother of two says she’s savoring every day of her busy life after doctors believed she had died less than a month ago. She told The Associated Press on Monday she has a deep appreciation for each new day, no matter how routine. The woman went without a pulse for 45 minutes following complications from a routine cesarean section after she gave birth to healthy baby girl. Medical officials called her survival a double miracle because she has no brain damage despite going for so long without a pulse.
SOON-TO-BE-RELAUNCHED EASTERN AIR LINES RECRUITS FLIGHT ATTENDANTS
The Miami-based airline will hold a recruiting session Nov. 22 and Nov. 23. Applicants must fill out a form online, and the airline will invite candidates for interviews. Eastern will initially operate as a charter airline. Officials say the company plans to start operations in early 2015 with Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The old Eastern went out of business in 1991. The majority stakeholder of the new company is Florida Panthers co-owner Vincent Viola.
TALLAHASSEE PODIATRIST CHARGED WITH 1ST-DEGREE MURDER IN DEATH OF HIS WIFE
Chief Assistant State Attorney Georgia Cappleman said a Leon County grand jury indicted Dr. Adam Frasch on Friday. The body of Frasch’s wife Samira was found in February by a maintenance man. She had recently filed for divorce and been given temporary custody of the couple’s daughters and the house. Frasch had been jailed since Feb. 22 on a charge of interfering with child custody.
CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE GIFT CARDS NOW AVAILABLE ON LAND
The cards once were only available aboard one of the ships in the Doral-based cruise line’s fleet. The company says the prepaid cards soon will be available in more than 9,000 stores nationwide. The cards are available in amounts ranging from $25 up to $1,000. They can be used to pay for a cruise or for purchases on board.
