Stage for soccer success set in the summer months

All is quiet at Navarre High School on the day before the Fourth of July.

The lone exception is the music playing inside the football stadium where the girls soccer team is going through another summer workout on the track.

“Most people relax in the summer. We are out here at 6 a.m. ready to go,” rising junior Solaina Foster said.

Never mind that it’s hot. The mercury on the thermometer is already pushing past 90.

The returning players gathered for an interview agree on the weather assessment.

But they battle through it, knowing the summer months are crucial in preparation for soccer season, which begins in October.

“It’s a start. We want to have a great year, win a district title,” rising senior Autumn Slaybaugh said.

Maia Vacks is hopeful the team can make a run at state for the first time since 2015. The soon-to-be junior will tell you the work to achieve that goal begins now.

“The summer workouts allow us to get an edge on our opponents,” Vacks said.
