Mickey Vollmer tore her ACL in practice a year ago. It happened shortly after she made her high school debut in a preseason tournament at Pace.
On Thursday night, Vollmer was back in that same gym, healthy again and ready to play in Navarre’s preseason girls basketball game against Gulf Breeze.
It was a happy moment for the sophomore, and she came out playing with energy and effort, scoring 4 points and battling for rebounds while also playing tough on the defensive end of the floor.
Her performance is hardly a surprise. There’s added motivation for Vollmer after what she lost last season, and her effort helped propel the Raiders to a 50-10 win over the rival Dolphins in the Tip-Off Classic in Pace.
Vollmer took a moment after the game to reflect on missing all last season.
“It really sucked. I was happy I made varsity as a freshman, and it all went away so quickly,” Vollmer said.
She was pleased with her first time out but knows she has work to do as the season rolls on.
