Coming off one of its best seasons in program history, the University of West Florida softball team will start the season ranked third in the nation in NCAA Division II.
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association preseason poll was released Wednesday and UWF is behind only Minnesota State and Angelo State. Minnesota State received 14 first-place votes and Angelo State picked up two.
Last season, the Argonauts finished 46-15 and advanced to the Elite Eight in Salem, Va. They went 1-2 in the double-elimination tournament.
Navarre’s own Callan Taylor was a freshman on that team and hit .271. She drove in 32 runs and belted three home runs as the Argos won the most games since 2005.
UWF is favored to win the Gulf South Conference championship and begins its season Friday against Nova Southeastern in the Gulf Coast Invitational in Alabama.
