UWF hoops team ready for exhibition game

University of West Florida men’s basketball coach Jeff Burkhamer tried to schedule an exhibition game against a Division I opponent. It just didn’t work out.

But the Argonauts will get a chance to test themselves before the real season begins, hosting Fort Stewart out of Georgia on Sunday. UWF will face a team of former college basketball players now serving in the military.

“We would have loved to have a D1 game,” Burkhamer said. “It’s a dress rehearsal for everyone. It will be good getting to play at home, and it’s good to have a game against former college players. It will be a tough contest but a good learning experience.”

Tip-off is 3 p.m. at the UWF Field House and reigning Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Year Jon Brown is looking forward to the opportunity.

“We’re going to be playing against grown men. It will be a fun experience,” Brown said.
