Three-time World Series champion manager returns to Southern League roots during all-star break

Tony La Russa got his start as a manager in the Southern League, spending half of the 1978 season managing Knoxville, the Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.

No one knew it at the time, but it was the beginning of a remarkable career for a manager who went on to become one of the best in the business during a career that saw him lead his teams to three World Series titles and more than 2,700 wins.
