The sound of a whistle. It drew Greg Taylor into coaching football at Navarre.
He was walking out of the high school during a pre-planning day over the summer in 1997. It was his first year at the then year-old school.
“Instead of going to the car, I went out to practice and started watching it. I did that for two or three days,” Taylor said. “I went home and told my wife I was thinking of coaching football. She said go for it.”
He did. And the rest, as they always say, is history.
Fast forward 21 years after countless practices, hours of game planning and Friday nights in the fall, some joyful, others painful, and Taylor is stepping down.
Garrett Bagley will take over as the defensive coordinator.
“It’s been a good run for me,” Taylor said.
Taylor has been the defensive coordinator for the past 13 seasons. He still plans to stay on with the team in some capacity, though that role has yet to be determined.
Understand that his decision was not an easy one.
