On a humid July morning Mary Moorer is busy working with the youngest age group of swimmers at the Navarre YMCA pool.
One of the young girls, with a kickboard in hand, gets set to jump back into the pool when Moorer asks how many laps she has left. The girl tells her four but is corrected and is told she has already done four and has one to go.
Moorer loves working with the youngest swimmers on the YMCA swim team as she helps lay a foundation for future success in the pool.
“I like working with the young kids to get their habits right and watching them improve throughout the summer,” Moorer said.
Moorer has been coaching the YMCA swim team since the facility opened more than a decade ago. She is also the head coach of the Navarre High swim team.
The sport is as popular as ever in the area, with 120 swimmers of various ages on the team this year.
“I have the privilege of having a job that’s not really a job. I don’t look at coaching as work,” Moorer said.
