On a hot May afternoon, eighth-grade football players, many of whom who will one day become the stars on Friday nights in the fall, go through another day of spring football practice on a field behind Navarre High School.
For the first time ever here in Florida, rising freshmen have been afforded the opportunity to take part in spring football – a rule change by the FHSAA opened the door to it – and freshman head coach Rusty Bauldree didn’t hesitate to have his future players take advantage of it.
Navarre has had a spring football program for a long time, but prior to this year, it consisted primarily of work in the weight room. Full contact on the field was never part of the equation.
