Football fields, volleyball courts, swimming pools and cross country courses will be silent this weekend.
Due to the threat of Hurricane Irma and the evacuations resulting from it, Governor Rick Scott ordered Thursday night that all public schools, state colleges, state universities and state offices to close Friday through Monday.
Schools in Santa Rosa County will not play any athletic events this weekend either in the wake of the closures. The schools can be used as shelters for displaced residents and staging areas for hurricane recovery efforts.
Among the cancellations is seventh-ranked Navarre’s football game against Crestview Friday night and the home opener for the the University of West Florida football team against No. 16 Midwestern State Saturday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium. Raiders head coach Jay Walls said no makeup date has been scheduled. His Navarre team is 2-0 on the year.
All other athletic events for Navarre have been iced as well for this weekend. The volleyball team was expected to play at the Tate Invitational Saturday and the swim team was scheduled to compete in the Patriot Invitational at the West Florida pool. The girls and boys cross country teams were gearing up to compete in the West Florida High Cross Country Invitational.
