Friday night’s Maroon and White Scrimmage at Bennett C. Russell Stadium provided a glimpse of what the Navarre Raiders will look like in the fall when the games count.
They went into this scrimmage on a warm evening in late May excited about the opportunity to play in front of the fans and put their talent on display, especially on defense, where big plays, key stops and an interception by Nate Hering were among the highlights.
There were promising signs on offense, too, especially out of the backfield where Xayvion Thomas scored a pair of rushing touchdowns. Thomas is one of the Raiders’ top defensive players as well.
Jayden Antonio, Navarre’s top returning rusher, scored a touchdown, as did TJ Peltier.
Marlon Courtney had moments where he looked sharp as well, and the offensive line, behind its size and strength, looks poised to protect its quarterback with everything it has.
Even special teams had its share of moments, including a made field goal by Preston Penton.
“I thought the effort was good on both sides,” Walls said. “I thought defensively, we played pretty good, played physical, played hard and made some plays in crucial situations. It was a good night for our defense.”
