Raiders win two games in Aggie Classic

Navarre’s baseball team faced four teams from Oklahoma last week and came away from the Aggie Classic with a 2-2 record.

A total of 20 teams competed in the tournament over the course of four days during spring break. Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Florida were represented in it.

The tourney opened with a game against Booker T. Washington out of Tulsa. Senior pitcher Kaleb Hellard made his first start and threw a complete game as the Raiders took a 4-2 decision over the Hornets.

The Hornets came in at 2-3 and started freshman Jesse Slimp in an effort to develop a young pitcher.

“Excited,” is how Hellard described his pre-game emotions.

It didn’t look promising when Hellard’s second pitch plunked the Hornets’ leadoff hitter in the back.

“I felt strongest in the third (inning) after we put up a few runs,” he said.

The game winning run came in the second inning when Washington’s pitcher balked, allowing Cameron Thomas to run across the plate uncontested.
