Raiders shine in all-star game

Marcus Richardson only scored seven points in Friday night’s Subway High School All-Star Basketball game but the impact the Navarre Raiders senior had on the outcome of the game was hard to ignore.

Richardson hit three clutch free throws late in the final two minutes of action to help lift the East to a 100-91 win over the West at Pensacola State’s Harstell Arena. He was named the MVP of the West squad as a result.

“I’ve put a lot of effort into my free throws and they just come easily for me now,” Richardson said. “It feels amazing to be the MVP. I’m happy I was able to represent my school and my family and friends in this game.”

The game, featuring seniors from schools in Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa Counties, was tight most of the evening, with the East and West all tied at 44-44 at halftime.

Navarre had two other players on the East roster in Tre Baker and Demetre Page. Page was unable to play because of an injury but Baker did get into the game and scored seven points as well.

“It was great playing with Tre again,” Richardson said. “I wish Demetre could have played, too. It was exciting being a part of this game.”

Richardson helped Navarre win a school-record 17 games this season and advance to the regional tournament for the first time in 12 years.

He is thankful for the success he was able to enjoy as a senior.

“I felt like I left a legacy at Navarre,” Richardson said. “It was a good season for us and we went far. I wish we could have gone further but it was fun being a part of the team.”

The East won the girls game as well, earning a 71-56 win over the West. Navarre’s De’Naizha Elder finished with 12 points. Jordyn York and Khorri Newton also represented the Raiders in the game, scoring 7 and 6 points, respectively.

York also won the 3-point shooting contest.
