Navarre faces its biggest test of the season tonight when it battles Crestview in a 7:30 p.m. showdown at Bennett C. Russell Stadium.
The Raiders (2-0) and Bulldogs (2-0) are squaring off in a matchup of state-ranked teams. Navarre is sixth and Crestview is ninth in the Associated Press poll.
Navarre rolled over Washington last week in a 52-13 victory and has outscored its first two opponents 88-19. Crestview edged Saint Martin’s out of Mississippi 17-14 and has won its first two games by a combined score of 85-14.
Both defenses will be put to the test. The Raiders have a wealth of playmakers, including Dante Wright, who has caught two touchdown passes. Quinn Caballero has a pair of touchdown receptions as well. Josh Carter, Chris Williams and Jaydin Antonio have all rushed for a pair of touchdowns. Marlon Courtney has thrown three scoring strikes and has rushed for a touchdown.
Jay Stanton is the go-to-guy for the Bulldogs, rushing for 308 yards and six touchdowns.
The Raiders and Bulldogs haven’t played each other since 2014 when Navarre won 21-0. This game won’t have any bearing on the district standings but it will go a long way in terms of playoff points.
Head coach Jay Walls is 61-15 and is in his seventh season at the school. His team is 29-2 in the regular season over the last three seasons.
Walls has a Crestview connection. He’s a former assistant coach at the school.
Dante Wright is 80 yards away from becoming the all-time leader in receiving yards for a career. He has 1,748.
The Raiders have pitched a shutout in at least one half of each of its first two games.
Alex Gilchrist has racked up eight tackles to go along with two sacks this season.
