Cody Thompson admits he didn’t have his best performance of the year Thursday afternoon at the District 2-2A weightlifting meet at Choctaw.
But he still won a district title, one of five Navarre lifters to do so, and the Raiders left town with the trophy they came for, repeating as district champions and winning their third title overall in program history.
Thompson played a key role. He checked in with a combined lift of 415 pounds in the 129-pound weight class, including 210 on the bench. He was hoping for 215.
“My bench wasn’t my best, but I still got first. It feels good,” Thompson said. “It wasn’t a bad meet, but it wasn’t my best.”
Still, with the team taking home the trophy, it was a good day overall.
“We’re happy we won again,” Thompson said. “The next one (regional) is even bigger for us.”
Josh Carter is also thrilled with the team win. He won the 219-pound weight class with a combined lift of 685, including a 355-pound bench press effort for the reigning state champion in his weight class.
“We came here expecting to win the district, and to know we accomplished it, it feels good,” Carter said.
