As soon as Choctaw and Fort Walton Beach were announced as the second and third-place teams, respectively in the District 2-2A boys weightlifting meet Friday afternoon, the Navarre Raiders knew what was coming next.
The excitement in the eyes of the Raider lifters was evident as they awaited the official announcement that they were going to be crowned district champions for the first time in program history.
“Winning today is certainly big for us,” Navarre head coach Jay Walls said. “Our kids have worked really hard since January. It’s a big accomplishment.”
Navarre finished with a total of 71 points, edging runner-up Choctaw by nine. Fort Walton Beach was third with 54 points.
Paving the way for the Raiders on a memorable afternoon at Fort Walton Beach High School were Michale Sandle and Xavier Fernandez. Both lifters won individual championships in their respective weight classes.
Sandle took home the gold in the 169-pound division with a total lift of 555 pounds. Fernandez finished on top in the 183-pound division as he came through with a total lift of 605 pounds.
A total of 16 other lifters finished in the top six, earning spots in the regional meet on April 1 at Navarre.
