“We’ve got a lot of work to do.” Those were the words of Navarre head basketball coach Terry Posey after his team dropped a couple of summer league games at Choctaw last Tuesday.
Navarre fell 69-44 to Choctaw and lost 40-38 to Niceville. The Raiders came into league play having held just two practices, Posey said.
Before stepping onto the court for the first time, Posey had few expectations.
“Just to run up and down the court against someone other than ourselves,” he said.
Sluggish is how Posey and starting forward Joseph Sczesny described the first half against Niceville.
“We came out slow,” Sczesny said. “We didn’t rebound as well as we can and played sloppy all around.”
Trailing 22-14 at halftime, Sczesny described how the gears shifted in the players’ heads.
As an individual, the junior forward showed a slashing drive off the dribble.
“I saw some opportunities,” Sczesny said. “If the lane was open, I was going to attack the rim hard for two points or draw a foul.”
Posey, set to enter his second season at Navarre, shuttled in a mixture of seasoned and less-experienced players against Niceville’s taller lineup.
