Raiders kick off regular season against Dolphins

Passes are being thrown and catches are being made on a spring-like afternoon in Northwest Florida. Here inside Bennett C. Russell Stadium, preparation continues for the first girls flag football season in program history.

The anticipation ends tonight. The curtain rises on the first regular-season game for the Raiders, who welcome rival Gulf Breeze to town for a 7 p.m. showdown at the stadium.

Quarterback Keona Ennis is ready.

Practice started three weeks ago. It wasn’t the smoothest of starts, according to head coach Sean Tomey, who has a background coaching football.

“It’s funny. I started off using terminology I know as a football coach, but these kids are playing the sport for the first time, and it was almost like I was speaking a foreign language,” Tomey said.

He quickly simplified everything.

“I really had to back down and explain the terminology and make things as simple as possible,” Tomey said. “It’s worked out. We’ve had some good practices since then.”
