Navarre’s softball team went extra innings against rival Gulf Breeze Thursday night but came up short in its bid for a victory, falling 9-8 to the Dolphins.
The Raiders trailed 7-5 entering the seventh inning but Hanna Stapleton came through with a double that went off the fence in the outfield and drove in two runs to tie the score.
In the eighth, Navarre took an 8-7 lead when Britney Silver laid down a bunt to bring Holly Koch across the plate.
Gulf Breeze scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win in a game where momentum swung back and forth all night. The Dolphins scored the winning run off a wild pitch.
Navarre trailed 3-0, led 5-3 and then fell behind one more time before forcing extra innings.
Head coach Kelly Hayes was pleased with her team’s effort even though it didn’t result in a victory.
“They gave everything they had mentally, physically, emotionally,” Hayes said. “The momentum was up in the air for both teams to grab. We had some mistakes that cost us.”
