Raiders claim Rafferty Cup

Talented athletes and quality coaching generated plenty of success on the field and in the gym this season for the Navarre Raiders.

So it comes as no surprise the school claimed the Rafferty Cup Wednesday night. The award was created by lawyer Troy Rafferty – a partner at Levin Law Firm in Pensacola – and is given to the top athletic program in Santa Rosa and Escambia Counties.

This was the 10th year the award has been presented and the first time Navarre has won it. State champion weightlifter Olivia Brahms was awarded the Troy Rafferty Scholarship, which has a value of $10,000.

“It’s unbelievable,” Navarre athletic director Scott Murphy said. It’s a great award and speaks volumes for the players, the commitment they have, and is also a credit to the coaches we have around here.”

To say it was a great year for the Raiders would be an understatement.

Navarre’s football team completed the first perfect regular season in school history last fall, going 10-0 before falling 23-22 in double overtime to Tate in the opening round of the playoffs.

The boys and girls basketball teams turned heads with their stellar seasons. The boys set a record for wins in a season, racking up 17, and advanced to the regional tournament for the first time in 12 years.

Meanwhile, the girls, under the direction of first-year head coach Jackie Coyne, won 17 games as well and claimed a district championship with a convincing 61-43 win over area power Niceville. Navarre, which won only two games the previous year, also punched a ticket to the regional tourney.

It was a great year for the weightlifting teams as well. The girls repeated as state champs and have won three of the last four state crowns. Savannah Diel, Payton Watson and Brahms all won individual state championships.

The boys made school history during their weightlifting season, winning district and regional championships for the first time. A record eight weightlifters advanced to the state meet.

The girls soccer team and baseball team both made regional tourney appearances as well.
