Navarre’s girls soccer team continued its winning ways with a 3-0 shutout victory over Choctaw at home Saturday. The game was also designated senior day, honoring six team managers and five current players.
Many tears were shed as the team honored its seniors.
The five players were Jocelyn Fernandez, Rosie Martino, Anakah Madril and the Seward sisters, Jennifer and Jessika. All five spent four years on the varsity squad. The team managers recognized were Makayla Downing, Jordan Lassiter, Abigail Pantlitz, Sara Swanson and Emily Turoff.
Many of the managers were former players that were injured, cutting their playing days short.
The game started with a kick by senior Hanna Spicer. A second-year player on the varsity team, Spicer missed playing this year due to surgery. She made the first kick while on crutches. The game was stopped to allow the team on the field to say one last farewell to Spicer.
The teams spent the first 15 minutes finding their way around a soggy field. Choctaw did get off a couple of early shots that challenged Rosie Martino in goal. One shot hit the cross bar and another barely redirected, hitting the left post.
In the 16th minute of play, Hailey Bastian took a pass from senior Jennifer Seward and raced down the left side of the field.
