Raiders’ 400 relay team wins regional crown to punch ticket to state

The dream of going to state came true for several of Navarre’s track athletes Thursday afternoon.

Navarre’s 400 relay team took center stage as it won a Region 1-3A championship at Chiles High School in Tallahassee. The relay squad of Lee Jones, Royce Thomas, Dante Wright and Xavier Allen clocked in with a time of 41.89 to punch a ticket to the next Friday and Saturday at the IMG Academy in Bradenton. The team actually took fourth in the prelims (42.26) before turning in a head-turning performance in the finals.

Khiara Newton is headed to state for the second consecutive year after taking third in the pole vault, soaring to a height of 9-feet-6 1/4 inches. The sophomore was sixth at state last season.

Abigail Pantlitz is headed to state for the first time in her career, finishing third in the 100 in a time of 12.33. Pantlitz is only a freshman but has been running track since middle school.

Ethan Fulk made history as the first adaptive track athlete out of Northwest Florida to go to state. The freshman qualified in the 200 wheelchair with a time of 1:10.25 and he won a regional crown in the 800 wheelchair race as well, crossing the finish line in a time of 5:07.99.

Fulk capped his impressive day with a regional championship in the shot put, coming through with a throw of 13-10 1/2.
