Navarre’s volleyball team split its first two matches of the year, topping Milton in its opener Tuesday and falling to rival Gulf Breeze Thursday.
Staying close in games 1, 3 and 5, the Raiders put together timely rallies that pushed them past the Panthers. But they didn’t have the same fortune against the Dolphins as they suffered a loss in their district opener.
The first game was closely contested with neither side establishing a more than a two point lead. Milton finally took a 14-12 lead. On the next Milton serve, a long rally occurred before the Panthers won the point and they took a three point lead which was the largest lead of the night.
The rally seemed to energize the Raiders. Caitlin Bethell went to the service line and the Panthers had trouble digging and passing Bethell’s serve. By the time the Panthers achieved a side-out, the Raiders took a 19-15 lead. The Raiders tightened up their defense and Madison Jones controlled the net, blocking Panther kill attempts as the Raiders cruised to a 25-20 win.
