Tony Carter has talked all season about peaking at the right time. Friday at the Andrews Invitational in Gulf Breeze, his Navarre Raiders showed they are indeed on the right track. Literally.
Navarre’s girls track team won its first invite of the season, rolling up 126 points to crush the 16-team field. Pine Forest was a distant second with 89 points.
The Raider boys finished fourth out of 17 teams, scoring 63 points. Pine Forest won with 98 points.
Carter, the head coach of both teams, was particularly impressed with the girls team, which hoisted the trophy at the end of the day behind a stellar all-around effort.
“I think they gave an outstanding effort,” Carter said. “The girls hit their stride and kept on rolling. We picked up points we normally don’t pick up points in.”
Carter was proud of what the boys team did as well, especially being down to of its fastest runners in Dante Wright and Evan Gourley. Both were competing in the regional weightlifting meet Friday.
“Our boys gave an outstanding effort,” Carter said. “We were missing some of our major contributors because of weightlifting, but we had some young guys step up and perform well.
