Navarre girls golf coach Samantha Holt still hears stories from her golfers about running into fellow students who have no clue there is a girls golf team at the high school.
But the word is spreading. And the numbers have nearly doubled. Only six were on the team last season. There are 10 this year. Twelve tried out but two were unable to golf due to other commitments.
“We’ve opened some eyes,” Holt said. “We made T-shirts to sell as a fundraiser and the girls are out talking about the team. We even have girls in middle and elementary school that come practice with us sometimes. The word is out there that we have a team.”
This is Holt’s second season at the helm of the team. She is a former golfer at Southern Mississippi. Headlining the Navarre team are three regional qualifiers: Julianna Salinas, Vanessa Salinas and Kathryn Serenio. All three have a shot to get back there again this season.
