Raider 5K benefits football programs

Mike Baker was the first one across finish line Saturday morning at the inaugural Navarre Raider 5K, but his victory wasn’t nearly as important as the cause he was supporting.

The money raised from the event on a warm, sun-splashed morning will be used to support the football programs at Navarre and at the NSYA.

For Baker, who coaches NYSA football under Paul Taylor and has a son on the freshman team at the high school, that meant a lot. He said as much after crossing the finish line on the track at Bennett C. Russell Stadium. The 5K began at the NYSA complex.

“I love 5K’s, and when you have a 5K in your backyard, even if you aren’t in prime race shape, and I’m not, you are still going to support it,” Baker said.

The 5K is the newest but not the only fundraiser the football programs capitalize on throughout the year.
